Spassky at Fischer’s grave

There is no doubt that Boris Spassky, former Soviet chess champ, and Bobby Fischer, former American chess champ, were the biggest rivals in the history of chess. Fischer beat Spassky in 1972 and became first American chess champion of the world. He beat Spassky again in rematch in 1992 in former Yugoslavia. Even though they were big rivals in chess, they were also very good friends. Fischer died in January 2008 in Reykjavík where he lived since 2005. Spassky who is living in Paris came to Iceland to honour a memory of his friend at his grave.

He brought flowers, laid them down, then he straightened up and stood at Fischer´s grave for couple of minutes while wiping his eyes. Afterwards he told reporters a joke if the spot next to Bobby Fischer is available.
